PSYCH UP INDIA

The four piece Hollow Ship, consisting of Thomas Frank, Mårten Magnefors, Donovan von Martens and Vincent Vensal), are heading off to Ziro Festival, which is one of several upcoming live dates in India for the band. A lifetime memory and a very speciel occasion for everyone involved.

Ziro Festival of Music is an outdoor music festival held in the Ziro valley in the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The festival promotes indigenous tribes and artists from Northeast India while showcasing the Indian and global independent music scene. Set against the picturesque Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh, the festival uses locally-sourced materials like bamboo and employs local community members to host attendees, prioritizing sustainability practices.

Against that background, Hollow Ship seem like a perfect match. Coming from a tradition of improvising and jamming, the band see their live ans studio sound as two really different things.

– In the studio we aim at getting a not too clean sound. We like a little noise in the corners. In the live situation we aim at dynamics, for this India tour in particular this has been extra important to us, singer and guitarist Thomas E. Frank says.

Looking forward to the tour, the band find inspiration in the fact they are playing somewhere completely new for them. And the possibility of meeting a completely new audience is really exciting.

– We are humble and understand the in many ways superior music tradition that exists in a country like India. We’d love to be able to catch a show of that. The Ziro festival and the surrounding landscape seems just right for us, says Thomas.

The band loves outdoor concerts and the long set time and says it’s needed to go deep. Hollow Ship prepare for live shows in their studio space, rearranging the music every now and then and figure out new sounds and approaches to the songs.

When the times comes to get on stage we try to forget that and focus on the now and being open to new possibilities within our collective understanding, Thomas says.

The band adds that it’s fun to play fan favorites live but also the most recent material since it feels rejuvenating to them. Coming up Hollow Ship has a few short tours booked for next year, and reveals the exciting news that a new album is in the mixing phase. They hope to release some new music early next year.
