HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF
From DIY hustle in Gothenburg to international stages — Wolfschmidt is gearing up for their first shows abroad, new music, and a darker, rowdier sound.
From early bedroom recordings in 2021 to international gigs — things have moved fast for Gothenburg-based Wolfschmidt. This fall, they’ll be playing live in Wales and Belgium for the first time.
– It feels like a mix between winning the lottery and living in a simulation. The paranoia that it’s all some huge misunderstanding or an elaborate practical joke is very real, says drummer Hampus Sjöstedt.
The band is this year’s Swedish act selected for Excite, a European network that promotes emerging artists across ten countries. For a DIY band like Wolfschmidt, who’ve been grinding for years to get gigs and manage everything themselves, the recognition means a lot.
– It’s a massive reward and a real motivation boost. The idea of countries ‘trading’ bands is honestly brilliant — it fuels so much inspiration, Hampus says.
Looking ahead, there’s more than touring on the horizon. Half of their current live set consists of unreleased tracks, and they’re planning to start dropping new music this fall.
– The sound is rowdier, more driven, and darker than our last EP. We’re introspective at heart, but we want to be able to knock over a crowd, too, he says.
As for dreams and future plans?
– We used to want to open for DIIV, but with the direction we’re heading now, that feels less fitting. Hitting every dive bar in Europe makes more sense. And then Japan, Hampus says.
And last but not least — a lineup change worth noting:
– We’re introducing our new bassist, Michael! His hobbies include playing with car tires and watching dinosaur videos.
